As a new immigrant, you probably hear some words that's doesn't seem to make sense. That is, until you find out that what they're saying are uniquely Canadian. Here are a couple of words that'll make it easier for you to understand them Canadians.
ABM - Automated Bank Machine. In some countries, they're referred to as ATMs.
Canuck - A slang for Canadian.
Double-double - A cup of coffee from Tim Horton's with two creams and two sugars.
Eh - Usually added at the end of a sentence or a phrase (That's an interesting sight, eh?)
Homo milk - Whole milk or homogenized milk. Usually 3.25% fat content.
Hoodie - A hooded sweatshirt
Hydro - Electric service. A lot of Canadian provinces uses hydroelectricity. Hence the term.
Loonie - Canadian One Dollar (CAD$1) or the Canadian Dollar coin. It came from having the loon on the back of the coin.
Mickey D's - McDonald's Restaurants.
Pop - Soft drink or soda pop.
Timbits - Name of a donut holes made by Tim Horton's.
Timmy's - Tim Horton's Restaurants. A chain of coffee and donut shop more popular than Starbucks, at least in Canada.
Toonie - Canadian Two Dollar coin (CAD$2) or two Canadian dollar. No, there is no such thing as a treenie. :)
Washroom - Toilet, lavatory, comfort rooms, restrooms.
Zed - the letter Z.
