Now that you have arranged for a place to live, I'm assuming the next thing you would look for is a job. Before you start sending out those resumes, there's something you have to do first before anyone will hire you.
You have to apply for a Social Insurance Number or SIN. This is a nine-digit number used in the administration of various Canadian government programs. You will require a SIN to work in Canada or to receive government benefits.
Here's the link to the Human Resources and Skills Development Canada (HRSDC) on how to apply for your SIN. You will also find a link showing the addresses of the local office where you go to apply. It's best to go in person as they will need to verify your identity.
You will need to provide at least two documents to prove your identity and status in Canada. For landed immigrants, a primary document is your original Permanent Resident Card The supporting document can be one of these other documents.
It is very important that you apply for you SIN. You will NOT be entitled to any government benefits nor will you be able to work without a SIN. It takes around three to four weeks to get a SIN depending on the volume they are processing. The card is usually sent to you by mail. If you cannot wait for your card to arrive, you can request to get a prinout of your SIN at the processing office. You will have to ask them when the earliest time you can request for it.
Also apply for a SIN for your children if they are minors. You will need a SIN for your children if you decide to apply for the Canada Education Savings Grant or CESG for your children.
